Dad passed away May 9, 1994. . . . I have enclosed a copy of the obituary. ----- In Memory Vernon John Mayer East Wenatchee -- Vernon John Mayer, 74, of East Wenatchee and a former Cashmere resident, died Monday, May 9, 1994, in Highline Convalescent Center following a stroke. He was born to John and Ida Marie (Mueller) Mayer at Carter, Mont. He married Theda Robinson in 1942 He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was a B-24 navigator instructor. He graduated from Kinman Business College and Washington State University. The family moved from Tonasket to Cashmere in 1959. Mr. Mayer worked as a warehouse manager for Oroville Cordell and Oroville United; as a salesman for Nuchief Sales, warehouse; sales manager for Regal Fruit, and Cashmere Pioneer Growers; sales manager for Oregon Pear Sales in Medford, Ore., Mojoinner & Sons in Sunnyside, Andrus & Roberts of Sunnyside and Washington Fruit Growers in Wenatchee. Mr. Mayer served on the Oroville City Council, and was a member of Oroville Masons, Cashmere American Legion, Yakima Shriners, Sunnyside Elks Club and was past president of the Oroville and Tonasket Lions clubs, as well as Lions Zone chairman. He was also Tonasket Cub Scout leader and little league coach. In the fruit industry, he was past president of the Wenatchee Valley Traffic Association, trustee of the Oregon-Washington Pear Bureau and held board positions in the Washington State Horticultural Association and at Nuchief sales. Survivors include his wife, at home; three sons, . . . ; a daughter, . . .; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son and a sister. Arrangements are by the Braun Funeral Home, Cashmere. Vernon John Mayer -- A graveside service for Vernon John Mayer, 74, a former Cashmere resident will be held on Friday, May 13, 1994 at 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon at the Cashmere Cemetery with Pastor Marlon Knoll officiating the service. The American Legion Post #64 will present the flag. Viewing will be Thursday, May 12, 1994 from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Friday, May 13, 1994 from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Braun Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Vern Mayer was officially sworn into the Army Air Corps in June 1942, at Geiger Field, Spokane, Washington. After extensive training he became a B-24 Navigator Instructor. Later, he was transferred to a unit that wasscheduled for deployment to the South Pacific, but was released before deployment, shortly after the nuclear bombs were dropped in Japan.

At home in Montana my name was pronounced Mire. But when I went into the service I changed it to Mayer because of confusion with several other men with the same sound. I believe Esther Kronen [sister] would pronounce it with the i sound.
