Facts and Events
Thomas Mason was baptised on 28th December 1783 at Exton in Rutland, son of Ann Mason, formerly Webster, and her husband Joseph Mason. On 5th August 1804, aged 20, Thomas was married at Barnack in Northamptonshire to Sarah Gamble. Thomas's brother William had married Sarah's sister Elizabeth a few years earlier, and Sarah had been running her late parents' business with Thomas's brother William for a few years. After their marriage, Thomas and Sarah returned to Exton, where they went on to have six children baptised between 1804 and 1813, although it would appear two of these children died young. Thomas's mother died in 1813 and his father died three months later, early in 1814. Thomas and Sarah left Exton some time between 1813 and 1815. For a few years between 1815 and 1822 they seem to have moved around a bit, appearing in Glinton, Newborough and Northborough in Northamptonshire and Thurlby by Bourne in Lincolnshire. During this time they had three further children, all of whom were baptised at the Barn Hill Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Stamford. Thomas had worked as a gardener in the early days of their marriage, but from the baptism of their youngest son in 1822 he described himself as a teacher of music. The family seems to have settled in Thurlby by 1822. Thomas died at Thurlby on 29th January 1841, aged 57, described as a "music-master, highly respected". Sarah survived him by ten years. References
