Joseph Mason's origins have yet to be established. If the age given when he died was correct, then he was born around 1737. His first confirmed sighting is on 6th April 1765, when he married Ann Webster at Tickencote in Rutland.

After their marriage, Joseph and Ann settled at Exton in Rutland, having seven children baptised there between 1767 and 1783.

Joseph's first known grandchild was born in 1796. He had at least 21 grandchildren born in his lifetime.

Ann died in November 1813. She was said to be 73 years old. Joseph survived her by just three months. He was buried at Exton on 22nd February 1814. He was said to be 76 years old.
