Sarah Gamble was baptised on 1st May 1779 at Barnack in Northamptonshire, daughter of Ann Gamble, formerly Deacon, and her husband William Gamble, a mason.

Sarah's father died in 1796, and her mother died the following year. Sarah and her sisters were left running the family business, which seems to have been connected with the quarries at Barnack. In 1800 a notice was placed in the Stamford Mercury newspaper by Sarah and her sisters concerning the administration of her late parents' estate. The notice also indicated that Sarah would be running the business with her brother-in-law, William Mason, who was married to her older sister Elizabeth.

On 5th August 1804, aged 25, Sarah married Thomas Mason from Exton in Rutland, who was the younger brother of her brother-in-law William Mason. They married at Barnack, but then moved to Exton, where they went on to have six children baptised between 1804 and 1813, although it would appear two of these children died young. They left Exton some time between 1813 and 1815. For a few years between 1815 and 1822 they seem to have moved around a bit, appearing in Glinton, Newborough and Northborough in Northamptonshire and Thurlby by Bourne in Lincolnshire. During this time they had three further children, all of whom were baptised at the Barn Hill Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Stamford.

Thomas had worked as a gardener in the early days of their marriage, but from the baptism of their youngest son in 1822 he described himself as a teacher of music. The family seems to have settled in Thurlby by 1822. Thomas died there on 29th January 1841, aged 57, described as a "music-master, highly respected". The census later that year finds Sarah living at Thurlby with two of her sons and a daughter-in-law and next door to another son and his wife.

Some time between 1841 and 1851 Sarah left Thurlby and moved over fifty miles to the north to Gainsborough. She died at Gainsborough on 9th February 1851, aged 71. The census later that year finds Sarah's sons Amos and John (and John's wife and son) living at Catherine Place in Gainsborough, suggesting Sarah had probably moved there with her sons.
