About Stephen Porter

Stephen Porter migrated to Lincoln County, TN. with his four brothers, John, Joseph, Charles and Reese prior to 1812. He was with his brother Captain John Porter in Col. John K. Wynne's Regiment, West Tennessee Militia in the War of 1812. This company served from 4 Oct. 1813 to 4 Jan. 1814 under General Andrew Jackson in Alabama. Most of the men in this company were from Lincoln Co., TN. They fought in the Battle of Talladega against the Creek Indians. Stephen Porter was a large land holder in Lincoln County. There are land transactions in the old deed books. A list of these are was published in the Marshall County Historical Quarterly, Vol. X, No. 1. 1979. The principal tract was about 500 acres and lay just east of Leonard's Bluff. This land transferred to his sons before his death and has remained intact to the present time. Some of the Porter brothers operated a tan yard here at a very early date. Stephen Porter had a saddle and harness shop on Arbor Hill Road which ran through this land. He continued to add to his holdings as the years passed. He was a prominent member of the Methodist Church and furnished a house for a church building which was known as Porter's Chapel. Late in his life, Stephen Porter married for a second time. On 4 Nov. 1841, he married Jemima Smith Quarles, a widow with three children. She was born in 1797 and died in 1857. Her will proved 2 Nov. 1857 named her son, William Randolph Quarles and twin daughters, Martha Ann and Mary Eliza. Nathaniel, b. 7 Sept. 1816; d. 10 Oct. 1896., Nancy Emmett, b. 10 Jan. 1818; d. 18 April 1910., Samuel, b. 15 Jan. 1819., John M., b. 8 Feb. 1820., David, b. 14 Feb. 1822; d. 27 Nov. 1834. Buried in Sandifer-Porter Cemetery, Marshall County. Unmarried.. Sarah Elizabeth, b. 7 Sept. 1823; married to George W. Cummings 1842., Stephen A. Jr., b. 1 Sept. 1830; d. 30 April 1906. Buried in the Sandifer-Porter Cemetery off Liberty Road, Marshall County, TN.
