Father of Simon Gillespie
Died 1823 in Botetourt, Virginia
Simon Gillespie was almost certainly a son of William and Mary Gillespie. A military order, dated 31 August 1782, creating districts in Botetourt County, Virginia assigned Simon Gillespie and William Gillespie to the 24th District.
Simon and Rebecca were probably married in what is now Botetourt County. Before 1769 the area was part of Augusta County.
Simon appears to have owned land on Wilson's Creek in Allgeheny County, Virginia. After his death, in 1824 his son Simon gave a power of attorney to James H. Gillespie to sell that land. The younger Simon had apparently inherited the land from his father the preceding year. He appears on a 1785 tax list in Frazier's District in Botetourt County.
His four children are listed in Abstracts of Alleghany Co. Deed Bk. 1822-1829, compiled by Marsha Martin, pp. 43-44. They were John, Simon, Rebecca Wilson and Nancy Newell.
Simon was born in 1748. He is the son of William Gillespie and Mary Yeomans. He married Rebecca Carruthers. According to the Tax List he is living in Frazers Dist Botetourt County with 6 people on a moderate farm with 4 buildings. His brother, William is lives with 4 people in one building. He is in an unmarked grave at the Fincastle Prebyterian Church Cemetery in Botetourt County, VA
