- ↑ Sherman left Indiana in about 1912, planning to go to Alaska, and hoping to earn enough money to buy land in Texas. His traveling money ran out by the time he got to San Francisco. He made his way to Wasington and worked for Herbert & Gert Dykers on their farm near Oak Harbor in Island Co. While working for the Dykers, Sherman met Marietta Legg, who was also employed at the farm. Marietta & Sherman were married about two years later.
- ↑ Sherman & Marietta started farming in the Dalhart area. The farm was between Chamberlain & Dalhart. His parents & brothers had moved there from Indiana & had spreads there as well. Their neighbors were the Slaybaugh's who allowed Sherman to haul water from their well (per Martha Porter DeVries) since there was no well on Sherman's property. He had two mules (Jep & Jude) who were hitched-up to accomplish this task. Years later, Marvin Porter recalled that his nose was broken when he was kicked by one of those mules. Percy recalled (in 2004) that the Sherman Porter family had 22 milk cows on their farm in Dalhart, TX. During the same conversation, he also remembered that he and his brother Marvin had "lots of fights" and that their father (Sherman) made them "cut down their own spanking-switch".

- ↑ Sherman worked with Joe Lang on the construction of the Cornet Bay dock. His job involved driving the piling for the dock and he worked each day in the cold water. His arthritis was severe, even then (as per daughter, Margy, he had arthritis in his 20's). He suffered greatly while working under those cold and wet conditions.
