Notes by John Emmet Todd, 1896: "Sarah Smith was born August 31, 1787. She was a wife and mother of the type commended by the author of Proverbs 31:10-31. She died at Canton, Illinois Feb. 1, 1879, and is buried in the lot with her husband. To them were born 13 children, who all grew up and were married, a very unusual record."

Isaac Rodenbough gives her parents as Jacob Smith and Ruth Short,, but according to some other trees the Sarah Smith born to Jacob and Ruth was married to John Speaker
