Notes by his grandson John Emmet Todd, 1896: "John Hockenberry Rodenbaugh was born in New Jersey August 1, 1785, and married Sarah Smith in May, 1804. Together they came to Canton, Illinois in the spring of A. D. 1853. He died there May 11, 1865, and is buried in Lot 362 of the Canton Cemetery. He lived in the house which stood on the lot which is now No. 34 North Second Ave. He was a shoemaker by trade, and wrought at his trade until his death. He was a drummer in the militia, and was ordered to the front toward the close of the War of 1812, but was not in any battle. He was a fine singer and up to an advanced age was choir leader. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Canton and an elder. He made a number of drums and a number of violins, some of which were of superior excellence. He was a man of great activity and industry, and of unblemished integrity. He was very tender hearted and any cruelty or injustice roused him to a fiery anger which was as quick to resent brutality, as it was quiet under almost all other provocations. The compiler of this record places so high an estimate upon his character that he counts it one of the high privilges of his youth that he was permitted to know him in the intimacy of the house life, and desires to perpetuate his memory for the numerous descendants of his blood. The memory of the just is blessed."
