Notes by John Emmet Todd, 1896: "Henry Smith Rodenbaugh. Born Nov. 8, 1815. Married to Elizabeth Keely Dec. 20, 1840. Graduate of Princeton College. Ordained a Presbyterian minister at Port Kennedy, Pa. Began his ministry as pastor of Lower Providence Presbyterian Church in January, 1845, and spent his whole life as pastor of that church. Preached his 45th anniversary sermon there Jan. 26, 1890. Preached his last sermon there April 10, 1890 and died May 3, 1890 Druing this long pastorate he married over 900 couples and preached about 1200 funerals." From "Autumn Leaves from Family Trees" by Theophilus Rodenbaugh: Henry Smith Rodenbaugh was "born at Bethlehem, N. J....He was educated at common schools and at Lafayette College (1840). After teaching school for a season, he was duly ordained a minister of the Gospel and, for forty-five years, was the pastor of the Providence Presbyterian Church at Trappe, Pa. ... He died at Norristown, Pa. May 3, 1890. This was the area where Henry Rodenbaugh pastored for so long. Rev. Henry Smith Rodenbaugh was also for a time in charge of the Washington Hall boarding-school, where he influenced many young persons, some of whom became quite influential. Henry and his wife had six children, but only one of them grew to adulthood. Three of his children died within one week in Dec. 1862, indicating the presence of some lethal infectious disease during that time. Grave states: Birth: Dec. 8, 1814 Death: May 3, 1890 Husband of Elizabeth Rodenbough. Pastor of Lower Providence Presbyterian Church for 45 years. |
