John Sawyers was born 1760-1765 VA. He was the son of Sampson Sawyers & Agnes McGray, who were married in 1759 in Augusta County, VA. John Sawyers is listed in the 1790-1796 tax lists of Madison County, KY and the 1799-1814 tax lists of Shelby County, KY. In 1805 John Sawyer & Stephen Allen were named as co-executors of the estate of James Robinson. In the 1810 census of Shelby County, KY 6 males and 5 females were listed in his home. In the 1814 tax list he was assessed taxes on 100 acres on Bullskin Creek. John Sawyers died 1814-1815 Shelby County, KY. In August 1815 in Shelby County an inventory & sale bill of the estate of John Sawyers, deceased, was ordered to be recorded (Shelby County Will Book, 1815-1818, p29). In the 1815 Shelby County tax book his wife, Elizabeth Sawyers, appears in his place, she was listed as being taxed on 96 acres on Bullskin Creek. Elizabeth Sawyers in listed as a household head in the 1820 census of Shelby County, KY. Elizabeth is last found in the Shelby County tax records in 1824; she was then taxed on 94-acre tract on Bullskin Creek originally entered in the name of William Shannon. Sarah (Robinson) Sawyers appears to have died 1805-1814. “Sarah Sawyer” was named when her father, James Robinson, wrote his will in 1805. John Sawyers married second Elizabeth (Dinwiddie) McWilliams, 16 September 1813 Shelby County, KY. Elizabeth Dinwiddie was born 28 April 1768 VA and died 14 February 1837 Marion County, MO, she married Hugh McWilliams, who died c1807 Shelby County, KY. Elizabeth’s son, William McWilliams, married Elizabeth Fulton Gillaspy,
daughter of James Gillaspy & Mary Robinson, and who was named in the will of her grandfather, James Robinson, in 1805. In May 1816 Sampson Sawyers was appointed guardian for Thomas, Jane C., John Franklin & William Sawyers, infant orphans of John Sawyers, deceased (Shelby County, KY Will Book, 1815-1818, p134). In Shelby County in October 1818 the heirs of John Sawyers,
deceased, signed an instrument agreeing to pay monies to Elizabeth Sawyers, the administratix of the estate of John Sawyers, under the agreement she would make no future claims against the estate. The heirs signing were – Sampson, Betsey, Nancy, James & George Sawyers, and Sampson Sawyers also signed as guardian for the minor children – Thomas, Jane, William & John F. Sawyers. Rachel Sawyers was not named in the body of the document as an heir but her signature
was included in the heirs signing the document (Shelby County Will Book 4, pp217-218). Children of Sarah Robinson and John Sawyers were (birth dates of several of the children were not documented by this writer) –
• Sampson was born 1786 VA. He appears in the Shelby County, KY tax lists in 1808-1815. He was a soldier during the War of 1812. He died after 1818.
• Elizabeth was born 1787-1790. She married Thomas Aldridge, 30 July 1829 Shelby County, KY. On their marriage record it was recorded “daughter of John Sawyers dec’d”
• Nancy. She died after 1818.
• James (? born c1794). He was a soldier during the War of 1812. He died after 1818.
• George was born 1795 KY. He is listed in the 1840, 1850, 1860 & 1870 censuses of Clark County, MO. Married Mary. He died 23 June 1871 and was buried in the Troxel Cemetery, Clark County, MO.
• Thomas Hiram born 11 September 1799 Shelby County, KY. He is listed in the 1830 census of Shelby County, KY, 1850 census of Clark County, MO and 1860 & 1870 censuses of Mendocino County, CA. He married Mary Pierce King (1804-1842), 19 January 1826 Shelby County, KY & Margaret Hay (1825-1914), 6 June 1850 Clark County, MO. Thomas died 25 December 1879 Little Lake Valley, Mendocino County, CA, where he was buried in the Little Lake Cemetery.
• Jane C. (? born c1800). She married Eli Ambrose Troutman (1804-1894), 10 April 1825 Bartholomew County, IN. She died 27 August 1837 Fulton County, IN.
• Rachel born 10 November 1800 Shelby County, KY. She married William Troutman (1802-1887), 19 October 1822 Shelby County, IN. Rachel died 12 October 1869 Fulton County, IN, where she was buried in the Shaffer Cemetery. William Troutman was a brother of Eli Ambrose Troutman, who married Rachel’s sister, Jane Sawyers. They were sons of Peter Troutman (1769-1836) & Catherine Spurgeon; Peter Troutman’s third wife was Mrs. Mary Robinson, who was the widow of John F. Robinson, son of James & Elizabeth.
• William (? born c1801). He died after 1818.
• John Franklin (? born c1802). He married Mariah Lapsley Moody, 15 July 1830 Henry County, KY
