Facts and Events
Sarah was apparently still unmarried and living in the family of her parents in 1782; the 1790 Census for Monongalia County, Virginia (which was reconstructed from the 1782 tax lists) shows 7 white persons in household of William Robe, no other Robes are in Monongalia Co. Since Mary Robe Stewart was already married to John Stewart, this means that Sarah Robe Sutton was still unmarried in 1782. If it is true that Sarah Robe and Benjamin Sutton separated, it would not have been before 1820. They were apparently still living together in the 1820 Census for Brown Co., Ohio. The 1830 Census does not include a female of Sarah's age in the household. There is no listing for either Benjamin or Sarah in the 1840 Census. The Sutton-Beasley Families of Brown Co., Ohio traces descendants of Benjamin Sutton, Jr., b. 20 Sep 1759 in Somerset Co., NJ, married Sarah Tingley 1779 in Monongalia Co., VA, resided 1771-88 in Greene Co., PA, where he served in the Rev. War 1777-78; moved 1788 to Mason Co., KY; according to his 1833 Rev. War pension application, he moved to Brown [sic.; it was then Adams Co.] OH in 1801/02, where he resided until his death, 4 Sep 1840. His will is filed in Brown Co., Ohio and makes no mention of a wife living or dead, but heirs daughter Sarah Beasley, widow of Nathaniel and her children, and son Tingley Sutton and his children. The will of Otho Sutton (1845, Brown Co.) mentions brother Tingley. (Brown Co. was formed from Adams Co. 1818). The Sutton-Beasley book does not give Sarah Tingley Sutton's birth or death date. The Sutton-Beasley book does not document his marriage to Sarah Tingley, and moreover its authors were perhaps unaware that he was married to two wives named Sarah. Sarah Tingley perhaps died around 1782, and Sarah Robe raised three small stepchildren. Could this have been the cause of tension that caused her and Benjamin to separate? References
