Sarah is in Bern Twp., Fairfield Co., Oh., age 9 on the 1850 census with her father and step-mother.[p 442 fam #147/160] James was the son of Timothy P. and Ann (___) Denney. On the 1860 census we find James, 23, a farm laborer, and wife Sarah, 17, in Jefferson Twp., Polk Co., Oh. They live next door to her brother David, who married James' sister, Sarah.[p 104 fam #829/769 ] In 1870 they are in Walnut Twp., Polk Co., where we see James, 32, a farmer with $2800 worth of Real Estate and $1665 in personal property. Sarah, 27, is caring for John 9, and Ida, 3. In the home is also Lizzie Findley, 23, a teacher. (Abigail Findley, who married Reuben Rittgers (#16.2), had a sister Elizabeth called Lizzie.)[p 421 fam #163/112] On the 1880 census, in Grimes, Polk Co., Ia., James is 43, and a farmer. Sarah is now 37, and caring for four children in the home. Joseph Crisper age 19 works on the farm.[ED 175, p 586C, fam #219/223] In "History of Polk Co.", [no author listed; Union Hist. Co., Des Moines., Ia., 1880 p . 91,] we find that James is "Farmer, section 9, P.O. Des Moines. Was born in New Castle Co. , Del...When 15 years of age he moved with his parents to this county...now owns a fine farm of 200 acres." Marriage date and children listed. In 1900 we find James, 63, still farming in Bloomfield, Polk Co., Ia. With him is wife Sarah, 57, and A.R. (Albert), 29. Also in the home, and working as a farm laborer, is nephew James Rittgers, 18. [ED 61, p 5A, fam #58/59 ] In 1910, Webster Twp., Polk Co., Ia., James, 73, is farming. With him is wife Sarah, 68 . She declares they have been married 50 years and she has born 4 children, three alive at this time. They are next door to son Albert.[ED 184 p 8 fam #106/106] In 1920, we find Sarah, age 76, with son John T. Denny in Waukee, Dallas Co., Ia.[ED 21, p 8]
