Raised by her grandparents after her father was killed in the Civil War and her mother died almost simultaneously back home. She married a local boy before her 18th birthday. They are not found in the 1880 census. John died in 1884, and in 1886, she married John Quigley in South Dakota. John and Mattie's brother George moved to South Dakota at the same time and lived near each other.
