Joseph and Affa died the same week, him in battle and her back home in Wisconsin. The children went to uncles Benjamin and Cyrus, who filed for minors’ pensions on their behalf. Cyrus died after the first filing and Benjamin refiled for an increase -- at the same time changing the ages of the two oldest children to make them 6 and 4 years younger (thus extending the life of the pension). One sister signed an affadavit on the false date for the oldest girl Edith, while another sister and brother signed an affadavit for Cyrus with the original dates.
