    Carrick, Samuel (July 17, 1760 - Aug. 17, 1809), Presbyterian minister, president of Blount College, was born in Pennsylvania. His full name is Samuel Czar Carrick as proved by his signature to his marriage bond in Rockbridge County, Virginia, September 21, 1779. His education was completed in Augusta County, Virginia under the teaching of Reverend William Graham... Before entering upon the ministry he had married in Rockbridge County, Virginia, Elizabeth Moore, daughter of Robert Moore, of Timber Ridge.

    The pastor's wife died in September 1793 just when the Cherokees threatened to attack the residents of Knoxville, and Samuel Carrick, considering his duty to aid in defending the people imperative, left the task of burying his wife to the women of the community.

    He married in 1794 as his second wife, Annis McClelland, of Knoxville.
