Major and Roxanna's lives were saddened on 9 Jul 1861 when their 13 year old son, Montraville died. Two years later in the summer of 1862, when the Civil War was 1 year old, three of their sons enlisted , one of which did not return. In 1863 another son enlisted in the war. In 1870 their daughter, Angenoah, passed away.
During the years 1866-1877, Major and Roxanna and many of their children bought, sold or exchanged much land around Marion, IA. This was generally in Sections 32,33,13, and 5, Townships 83, 84, 85 and 86 and was in Range 5, 6, and 7. The land ranged in price from $2.50 to $27.50 per acre.
