"[William L. Shankland] was born in Preble County, Ohio, on the 22d of December, 1826, and was an only child. His father, Robert M. Shankland, was a native of Kentucky, and his mother, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Gobble, was born in Virginia. William's early days were spent in Washington County, West Virginia, where he had access to good school facilities, of which he was not slow to avail himself. After attending the academy at Abington for some time he came to this state in 1849, in company with his parents.  According to 'Descendants of William Shankland', Robert and Elizabeth had 3 children: Josephine, m. Charles Marshall Logan; Isabel Rachel, 1806-1869, m. James Rhoads Shankland; and Dr. William Lane Shankland, 1826-1909.  However, Josephine was the daughter of William Lane, and the only Isabel Shankland I can find that was born in 1806 was the wife of Robert's brother James and sister to Elizabeth Goble.  Perhaps she married a James Shankland in a previous marriage.
 In the 1850 census for Moniteau Co., Missouri, Robert 'Shanklin' is 50 'doct' from VA; with Elizabeth 50 VA and William 23 OH 'student'.
 In the 1860 census for California, Moniteau Co., Missouri, 'R. M. Shanklin' is 'doc't', age 60 from (Del?).  In his household are [second wife] M. G. [Margaret Graham] Shanklin, age 31 from (Va?); R.(N?) [Robert], male, 6, born Missouri; and S.C.T. [Sarah Catherine], female, age 4, born Missouri. {p. 819, <www.rootsweb.com>}
