According to the Shankland Family Research by Albert B. Shankland, John and his brother David moved to Nicholas Co., Kentucky, soon after their marriages in Delaware. John married Sarah 'Sally' Harney in 1787 and had nine children: (born in Delaware) Benjamin & Joseph [died before 1810] - (twins), 1788; John, abt 1789; Mary 'Polly', 1791; (birthplace unclear) Hester 'Hetty', abt 1793; and born in Kentucky, David, 1795; Robert M., 1797; James H., 1803; and Andrew G., 1805.

 In the 1810 census for Nicholas Co., Kentucky, John Shanklin has 2 males 0-10 [Andrew & James H.], 2 males 10-16 [Robert & David?] , 1 male 45+ [John]; and 2 females 16-26 [Polly & Hester], and 1 female 45 + [Sarah]. {  Nicholas Co.  In the 1820 census for Nicholas Co., Kentucky, John Shanklin is head of household with : 1 male 10-16 [ Andrew ], 1 male 18-25 [James H.], 1 male 45+ [John]; and 1 female 0-5 [possibly John Jr.'s daughter Elizabeth ],  2 females 16-25 [possibly Polly (Stoops) Shankland, widow of John Jr. & ?]; and 1 female 45+ [Sarah]. {Nicholas Co.   In the 1830 census for Nicholas Co., Kentucky, 'John Sr.' Shanklin is head of household with: 1 60-70 male [John], 1 10 -15 female [possibly Elizabeth Shankland, daughter of deceased son John Jr.], 1 70-80 female [Sarah/Sally].  {p. 213, l. 23, Nicholas Co.  By 1860, none of John & Sally's children were left in Kentucky.  Benjamin and David went to Indiana, Robert and James H. were in Missouri, and Andrew was in Illinois.  The others were deceased.
