P.S. Nettie Love wrote her sister-in-law Jane Love: "that yellow root has helped Melvins eye / he was so cross for a couple of days after you left that I could not do any thing but nurse him / I made Mellies white dress short sleeves or cut the others off and got edging and put around the bottom and neck and it looks sweet / O Yes I got a new bonnet the day you went home and baby a calico dress / I send you a piece of them" 1874 Aug. 30, Zillman Jones is visiting Robert and Nettie but is about ready to leave; Jane Love and her brother Joel have recently returned home from their visit with them. Lydia wrote her sister Jane: "Nettie got a letter from her Pa to day / he is not vey well" 1883 Aug. 22, Moran, Allen Co., KS. Lydia wrote her brother Joel: "Mell is not the same Boy as he was in Edgerton / there is also a change in the old man / he can Pick up the children and PUt them in the wagon most aney time and let them go" 1884 Feb. 3, Moran, Allen Co., KS. Lydia wrote her sister Jane: "all well but Nettie / She has a Cattarah in her hand / this is the 10th day / for 8 days she has sufferd terrible but wee think the work [worst] is over now . . . Sunday the 10 / will try to finish my letter . . . Netties hand is Some Better but she cant use it aney yet . . . Nettie will not write to aney one for a long time I fear her her fingers are going to trouble her" [Lydia's meaning here is a mystery as catarrh is the inflammation of a mucous membrane, particularly that of the nose, throat or bronchial tubes, causing an increased flow of mucus. Such debilitating pain would suggest what we now recognize as carpal tunnel syndrome.] 1884 March 5, Moran, Allen Co., KS. Lydia wrote her brother Joel: "all well Except Nettie / she had a Terriable hand / is getting better now / the woman where I am now has a (?)catorah in her right hand / is walking the Floor now / cant get aney rest at all . . . Joel would rather you would write to Bob your Self / I do not know what he will do / they dident see your letter / you speak of Bob growing you Part of his land / why do you want a Part of his when you can get a 160 for nothing Just as good as his / you will never miss the Watter untill the well runs dry / let me tell you that when you quit Sending him money / they were Living on corn Bread and Water Gravy and some times the children cried for more / corn was 90 cents and hardly aney to be had and Flora and doly [Robert's horses] so Poor they Stagered / you wouldent of Know them an Aug when I come but they said they were in good condition but they are fat now / if aney People Ever Earned a home they [have] / he owes me a bout 60 dolars and if I can wait dont you be too hard . . . Lydia Love wrote her sister Jane: "Netties father is with them now so I heard / you ask why she dont write / she dont write to me / hasent for 6 weeks / monday night . . . Lydia wrote her sister Jane: "I got a letter from Nettie Just before I come hear the onley one in 3 months / She has a Poor chance to write and Bob wont" 1885 Oct. 11, Burlington, Coffey Co., KS. Lydia wrote her sister Jane: "I got a letter from Nettie the other day / she says crops are Poor there / I dont know when I will go to see them . . . Netties father is with them / Bob has all he can take care of / is one reason I stay hear . . . Nettie says She is waiting for Salley to have one be fore she does / do you think She will half to wait long / if you knew how Nettie hates to write you would Excuse her / She dont write to me onley when I threaten vengence on her head . . . I will try to Bring Olive with me / She is a cliper a Spoiled chicken but no Boddys Fool / you know the Loves are all nice" 1885 Nov. 8, Burlington, Coffey Co., KS. Lydia wrote her sister Jane: "I got a letter from Nettie / Bob has been vey low with Typhoid fever and Erciplus [erysipelis or erysipelas] in the head and they shaved his head and put costic [caustic] on / she said he was as Black as a negro but was out of danger / with care I Look for more word in a few days." She goes on to mention her brothers, Joe and Evan, suggesting that she has had a falling out with them, then says, "I have but one Brother any more and that is Bob." 1885 Dec. 12, Nettie Love wrote her sister-in-law Jane Love: "Bobs sickness left him worse off than the spotted fever did 12 years ago but he is feeling pretty well now / the medicine that cured the eresipelis [erysipelis or erysipelas] took his hair all out so that I had to make him a flannel cap to fit close over his head / he wears it all the time in the hous and out of doors / when out he puts on his other cap over his flannel cap . . . Melvin was 12 and claud 4 years old the 9th Dec and Arthur was 7 years old the 7th of Dec / Ollie will be 10 the 10th of March and as to any more babys here why we are waiting to get rich and also waiting on god to help keep up the Name." 1887 Feb. 12, Evan Love wrote his sister Jane: "Jo Got a Postal from Bob recently / they were well / I Guess Bob has Lost his Land / I feel Sorry for him and hope he may get get It" 1887 Feb. 15, Lydia wrote her sister Jane: "I got a letter from Nettie / they are having trouble about their land / I am a fraid they will be thown out of a home in Plow time." 1887 March 2, Evan Love wrote his sister Jane: "do not hear from Bobs aney more onley he Lost his Land" ca. 1887 Summer. Evan wrote his sister Jane: "I never hear from Bobs at all or Siss Either" 1888 May 18, daughter Myrtle Dell born in Kansas. 1888 July 14, George Melvin Love wrote his Aunt Jane: "ma and Pa has not wrote to you for over two years / it is a shame to . . . Pa has been lea[s]ing here for 6 years and would have been set in the road if he hadent of rented / he expects to leave here next spring and go to Mo. or ark. And hunt squrels for a living . . . there are seven of us now / a dish washer at our house / they have named her Myrtle Del, Love. She will be two months old the 18th of this month." 1888 July 15, Olive Love wrote her Aunt Jane: "School will comence the first Monday in September . . . My little sister is one of the sweetest babys that ever was. / Claud and Arthur don't pay any attension to her / Cluad says he don't like her. / Claud and Arthur is great big boys . . . Ma has got a new washing mashine. / Claud is in the first reader at school / Arthur in the third / Melvin is in the fifth and I am in the fouth reader / I would like to study history but I think that it is to hard. Nettie Love wrote her sister-in-law Jane: "Melvin has been having a very sore eye the same eye that was sore when he was small / the children go to school" 1889 Aug. 15, Joel Love wrote his sister Jane: "no word from Bobs this summer." 1889 Aug. 30, Joel Love wrote his sister Jane: "We have had no word from any of Kansas folks." 1889 Aug. 30, Gridley, Coffey Co., KS. Lydia Love Massey wrote her sister Jane: "I got a letter from Joe some time a go / also one from Nettie / all were well / her Father is dead" 1889 Sept. 8, Moran, Allen Co., KS. Geo. M. Love wrote his Aunt Jane: "Pa has gone to Oklahoma to look for a home. He star[t]ed last Monday . . . Crops are not very good on the account of the drought" His sister wrote Jane the same day: "Pa started to Oklahoma last Monday / he will be gone about four weeks . . . the Baby cut her hand offle bad the other day with a broom corn knife but it is healing nice / We have to go three miles to sunday school but we have a good school . . . Pa started to Oklahoma the 2 of September" 1889 Nov. 1, Gridley, Coffey Co., KS. Lydia wrote her sister Jane: "I got a letter from Nettie / she and the children talk of coming to See me / She couldent stay mad at Siss / I am glad you like Evans Wife / hope she will Prove a Sister to you but I dont beleive Either one of them can fill Netties Place with me / forgive me if I Judge them wrong" 1890 Feb. 3, Moran, Allen Co., KS. George M. Love wrote his Aunt Jane: "We will stay here this year but have to rent our own place that we improved." If R.J. bought this farm, he apparently fell behind in his mortgage and it was repossessed, but the mortgage holder allowed them to stay and work it. 1890 March 5, Joel Love wrote his sister Jane: "We have not heard from Kansas for a long time." 1890 March 12, Hidalgo, Jasper Co., IL. Evan wrote his sister Jane: "A letter from Nettie and Mell Recently / they were all well / they talk of goeing to the "Strip" as soon as it opens" 1890 March 27, Hidalgo, Jasper Co., IL. Evan wrote his sister Jane: "A Letter from Bob and Melvin this week / they were all well / Bob was down to Oklahoma last winter / dont think he Likes it verry well / he likes the Cherokee Strip the Best / thinks he will go then when it opens up" 1890 June 28, Moran, Allen Co., KS. Ray has received word of the death of her aunt, Mrs. Nettie Love of Moran. Death was the result of a paralytic stroke. The funeral will be held at Moran Tuesday afternoon and Mr. and Mrs. Ray will attend.
