1874 Aug. 30, Zillman Jones was visiting Robert and Nettie (probably in Moultrie Co., IL, but the letter doesn't say) and was about ready to leave; Jane Love and her brother Joel had recently returned home from their visit with them.

Lydia wrote her brother Joel: "Joel would rather you would write to Bob your Self / I do not know what he will do / they dident see your letter / you speak of Bob growing you Part of his land / why do you want a Part of his when you can get a 160 for nothing Just as good as his / you will never miss the Watter untill the well runs dry / let me tell you that when you quit Sending him money / they were Living on corn Bread and Water Gravy and some times the children cried for more / corn was 90 cents and hardly aney to be had and Flora and doly [Robert's horses] so Poor they Stagered / you wouldent of Know them an Aug when I come but they said they were in good condition but they are fat now / if aney People Ever Earned a home they [have] / he owes me a bout 60 dolars and if I can wait dont you be too hard"

1885 Dec. 12, Joe's sister-in-law Nettie wrote their sister Jane: "Joe writes to us as though he thought he had an angel for a wife / I hope he may never have reasons to think different / as to their children I suppose they practice what Joe used to preach that 'poor folks had no business to have children' / he made that remark when I was in the family way for Claud and I still remember it against Joe so much so that I wish them the good luck to have twins first and then triplets."

1890 Sept. 16, Casey, Clark Co., IL. Joe Love wrote sister Jane: "I have been having trouble with my partner and I went out of the marble business a week ago -- we still are handling the undertaking and having some trade / got letter from E.J. / Hattie he says is not well [their baby, Leona May, was born that month]"

1890 Nov. 5, Joe wrote Jane that E.J.'s wife Hattie died the previous day, and he sent his hearse to Greenup to take her from the depot to the cemetery. 1890 Nov. 20, Joe wrote Jane: "we have taken E J. Babe / It has been sick is getting better now / we do not get lonesom during the night"

1891 March 13, Joe wrote Jane that the "Baby is doing nicely / growing and is well most of the time. / . . . / E.J. was here few days ago" 1891 April 27, Joe wrote Jane from Casey, IL, on his letterhead that identifies: J. J. Love / Furniture Dealer / Also, Undertaker / Casey Ill. He wrote: "We send you Leoes Shadow / do you think she has grown any / she is well and a nice baby / . . . / E J was here a week a go" 1891 Sept. 22, Joe wrote his cousin Lillice: "Baby not very well / cutting teeth / nicest Baby in Casey."

1892 Jan. 7, Moran, Allen Co., KS. Olive Love wrote her Aunt Jane: "Do you see aunt and uncle Joe any more"

1892 Jan. 20, E.J. wrote Jane: "Jo has left casey for good / Broke up [Joel's business failed] / he does not know what he will do"

1893 March 18, Joe's sister Jane died. 1893 May 22, Joe wrote his cousin Lillice from Mt. His parents were James and Rebecca Jones Dawson.* They had 3 sons Joseph Joel, Evan or Ivan Jefferson and Robert Jasper. Looking for information on his parents and brothers.

  • This would be Mary Jane Jones Dawson Love; Rebecca Dawson was Mary Jane's dau. by her first marriage to William Washington Dawson.
