- Robert Carden and Jenny Howery Carden lived their lives in Montgomery County. It is thought she came to Montgomery County from Botetourt County with her brother Daniel Howery when a young girl. Daniel was surety on Robert and Jenny's marriage bond and also bought her portion of their father, Jacob Howery's estate from them. From the records, it is believed Robert was a sharecropper and did not own property. On occasion he found it necessary to mortgage the household furniture and the crops in the field to provide for his family. Nine known children were born to them and I have extensive records on these children as well as Joseph and Mary's. Jenny's death date is unknown, but from census records we know that Robert died between 1850 and 1860. Robert is living with his son, John, and his family on the 1850 Montgomery County, VA. Chronicles of The Scotch-Irish Settlement in VA., Augusta 1745-1800, Vol. 2, pg. 331/357 (LIB/CNGS 65-15351), a Robert Carden, who was of age, married Janet Steele, 17 Dec 1799, married 19 Dec 1799. It is assumed that this is the correct Robert. There is also a Robert Carden who married Mary Clinebill, in Augusta Co., VA on 18 Sept 1813. The minister was Wright Burgess. [Note: likely a different Robert Carden].
