Origins

Richard Kimball is thought to be of or from near Rattlesden, Suffolk, England as that is where he and his wife Ursula christened their son, Henry. Rattlesden was also the home of his wife's father who names his Kemball (note spelling) grandchildren, which match up with the children of the Kimball emigrant.

While some genealogists argue against the emigrants Henry and Richard being brothers due to the distinct spellings of their last names, the 1890 Kimball genealogy clearly points out that the name was spelled both ways throughout many generations. Robert Charles Anderson (The Great Migration, IV:153, 159) also asserts that they were brothers, based on geography and occupation connecting them to their father Richard Kimball of Lawford, Essex.

Richard married (first) in England Ursula Scott, dau of Henry Scott of Rattlesden, England.

1634: Came from Ipswich, England on the Elizabeth (which left 10 April 1634), which on (date of record) 12 Nov 1634 (when arrived at Boston) included the following:

Life in New England

While they landed at Boston, he and his family soon afterwards settled in Watertown, MA, where he soon became active in the life of the new settlement.

1635: made a freeman May 6

1636-7: one of the proprietors (first residents) of Watertown; soon afterwards moved to Ipswich (where he was also one of the first residents) for the rest of his life. He was a wheelwright.

1645: Elected selectman

He was one of the strong men of the town and of frequent mention in the records.

1661: He married (second) Oct 23, 1661 Margaret DOW, widow of Henry DOW, of Hampton, New Hampshire.

Granted to Richard Kemball, the 23rd of February 1636, a house lott next adjoyning to Goodman Simons at the West end of Towne.

Legacy

Lived after his 80th birthday. Made a will March 5, 1674-75 that was probated Sep 28 1675. Richard Kimball died Jun 22, 1675; his widow March 1, 1676.

Henry, 15; Richard, 11; Mary, 9; Martha, 5; John, 3; and Thomas, 1; and serv. John Laverick, 15; was freem. 6 May 1635; rem. 1638 to Ipswich, there had more ch. and d. 1675, leav. Henry, Richard, Mary, Thomas, Benjamin, Elizabeth Caleb, Sarah, and ano. d. w. of John Severns. He is call. by Thomas Scott (a passeng. with w. and fam. in the same sh.) br. and this may mean, that one m. a sis. of the other, or they m. sis. but in this case not, I judge. the mere ch. relationsh. See Scott. It is said, that two of his s. Thomas and William, were k. by the Ind. in 1675; but I suppose Caleb was one. A William K. of capt. Oliver's comp. was wound. 19 Dec. 1675, in the gr. battle of Narraganset, but he was of Boston, and serv. as substitute for his master, John Clear. An Elizabeth K. aged 13, was passeng. in the same sh. with Henry and Richard; but on the custom-ho. list is not insert. as ch. of either, but under the care of Thomas Reyner.
