Rebecca Ann Dickson was born 7 Aug 1843 at 19 Regent Street in Poplar, the eldest child of shipwright Henry Dickson and Rebecca Ann Swan. Her parents were unmarried at the time of her birth but wed shortly after at St. Mary's Church, Stratford Bow on 27 August 1843. Rebecca was baptised at St. Anne's Church, Limehouse, on 31 December 1843.

Rebecca lived with her parents and siblings in Poplar, moving houses frequently along Regent Street, and in 1861 the family was living at 12 Orchard Street, Bromley by Bow. Sadly her brother John died aged 12 of scarlatina (scarlet fever) and she had four other siblings who died as infants.

On 27 April 1864 at her family's home at 2 Willis Street, Poplar, an unmarried 20 year-old Rebecca gave birth to a premature son, Henry Dickson, who died the same day. It is not known who the father was. On the birth certificate her occupation is listed as "sempstress".

Just a few months later on 19 June 1864 she was married at St. Thomas Church, Stepney, to Henry Young, a mariner and labourer at a shipyard. Witnesses to the marriage were Benjamin and Frances (Young) Scarlett, Henry's brother-in-law and sister.

Rebecca's father Henry Dickson died a few months later on 26 Oct 1864 from "dropsy" (oedema). He was only 42. Rebecca's mother never remarried but lived with or close to her children for the rest of her life, with Rebecca at her side when she died in 1894 at the age of 73 from "paralysis".

Henry Young and Rebecca Dickson had two children: Henry Charles Young born 5 June 1865 at 5 Willis Street, Bromley by Bow, and George John Young, born 24 Feb 1867 at 3 Glenister Street in East Ham. Sadly Henry Young Sr. died at 20 Regent Street, Poplar, on 11 Mar 1868 aged just 23 from a sudden ulceration perforation of the bowels. Rebecca was left a young widow with two children under 5, a very difficult position at the time when financial support of paupers was through the local workhouse. Rebecca and her two sons were briefly admitted to the Poplar workhouse on High Street in 1870. By 1871 they'd moved in with her mother and brother Henry (a labourer) at 12 Leicester Street, Poplar.

On 9 July 1871 at the age of 27 Rebecca remarried at St. Bartholomew's Church, Bethnal Green, to George Nowell, a blacksmith and iron yard labourer. Her brother Henry Dickson and Mary Deeble were witnesses (Rebecca's maternal aunts had married members of the Deeble family). Rebecca and George's first son Thomas Henry Nowell's birth was registered between October and December 1871, so she must have been pregnant when they wed. Thomas Henry and his half-brother George John Young were both baptised on 25 April 1873 at All Saints Church in Poplar. At the time the family were living at 8 Norfolk Street.

Over the next ten years Rebecca and George had eight more children, two of whom, George Henry and William Ernest, died of scarlet fever within a week of each other in 1880. Their youngest child Susan Emma died aged one from sudden acute pleuro-pneuomonia and their eldest daughter Rebecca Louisa died at the age of 17. It seems that Rebecca's son from her first marriage, Henry Charles Young was adopted by his paternal aunt and uncle Frances (Young) and Benjamin Scarlett, as he was living with them in the 1881 and 1891 censuses. Rebecca and Henry's other son George may have died young or he could have been working as a servant in 1881 - no records have been found yet that are definitely for this George Young.

In the 1881 census George and Rebecca were living at 11 Leicester Street in Poplar with their three children, Thomas, Rebecca, and Frances Nowell. George's occupation is listed as "ship smith". Their 3 year-old daughter Alice was a patient at the East London Hospital for Children in Glamis Road, St. Paul Shadwell. Rebecca's mother Rebecca was living next door at 12 Leicester Street.

In 1891 Rebecca and George were living with their children Rebecca, Alice, Frances and William Nowell at 32 Gaselee Street in Poplar. George's occupation is listed as iron yard labourer and their daughter Rebecca is listed as a match maker, while the younger children were still attending school. Rebecca's mother Rebecca was living just down the road at 2 Gaselee Street.

Rebecca's son Henry Charles Young was married on Christmas day 1893 to Rosetta Frances Amelia Whitfield, who gave birth to Rebecca's first grandchild in October 1894. Henry and Rosetta had another 10 children who all lived to adulthood.

Rebecca's daughter Alice married wharf labourer William Prater in 1899 and went on to have 11 children, at least 7 of whom survived to adulthood.

Rebecca's daughter Frances gave birth to four children out of wedlock, two of whom died young. She eventually married at the age of 38 to labourer James Clark, with whom she had one son.

By 1901 Rebecca, George, and their now adult children Thomas, Frances and William had moved down the road to 14 Gaselee Street. The men in the family were all listed as dock labourers.

Rebecca's last home was at 11 Warrington Place, Poplar. She died 1 March 1908 at the Bromley Sick Asylum, aged 64 years, of chronic bronchitis and heart failure. Her husband George died a year later.
