Henry Young was born 20 Apr 1844 at 3 Beneford Terrace, East India Row, Poplar, the 4th child of Charles Young, a blacksmith labourer and edge tool maker, and Sarah Blake. He was baptised at All Saints Church, Poplar on 1 Sep 1847 along with his brothers George and Robert. In 1851 he appeared on the census with his parents and siblings at 2 Tavern Row, Bromley-by-Bow. In 1861 the family appeared on the census at 2 Watton's Court, Poplar.
On 19 Jun 1864 he married Rebecca Ann Dickson at St. Thomas Church, Stepney. Witnesses were Benjamin and Frances (Young) Scarlett, Henry's sister and brother-in-law. Rebecca had only recently lost a child prematurely (Henry Dickson born and died 27 Apr 1864). She was not married at that stage and it is not known who the boy's father was. On the birth certificate her occupation is listed as "sempstress".
Henry and Rebecca had two children: Henry Charles Young born 5 June 1865 at 5 Willis Street, Bromley-by-Bow, and George Young, born about 1867 in Poplar.
In 1867 Henry's father Charles died at the age of 55 from "violent shock from injuries" (possibly related to his work as a blacksmith?)
Henry Young worked as a mariner and labourer. He died at 20 Regent Street, Poplar on 11 Mar 1868 aged 23 from a sudden ulceration perforation of the bowels. A post-mortem was performed by coroner John Humphreys on 16 March 1868, perhaps the record still survives somewhere?
