Henry Charles Young was born 5 June 1865 at 5 Willis Street, Bromley-by-Bow, the eldest child of Henry Young, a mariner, and Rebecca Ann Dickson. He was baptised at St. Michael and All Angels Church, Bromley-by-Bow on the 1st of April 1866. A younger brother, George, was born about 1867. Henry's father Henry Sr. died 11 March 1868 at 20 Regent Street, Poplar, from sudden ulceration perforation of the bowels at the age of 23, leaving Rebecca a widow at the age of 24 with two small children.
He and his mother and brother were briefly admitted to the workhouse in 1870.
In 1871 Henry was living with his brother, mother, and maternal grandmother and uncle at 12 Leicester Street in Poplar. On the 9th of July 1871 his mother remarried to ship smith George Nowell, and over the next twelve years they had eight children, half-siblings of Henry. As the only surviving child of Henry and Rebecca, Henry was probably informally adopted by his dead father's sister Frances and her husband Benjamin Scarlett shortly after Rebecca remarried. Henry is found living with Frances and Benjamin in the 1881 census (at the age of 15) at 7 Bloomsbury Street in Bromley, working as a factory labourer and again in the 1891 census, where he was listed as their son "Henry C. Scarlett" and working as a shipyard labourer.
On 25 December 1893 Henry married Rosetta Amelia Whitfield at St. John's Church. Witnesses were Rosetta's father John Alfred Whitfield and sister Bertha Marie. At the time Henry was still living at 7 Bloomsbury Street and working as a labourer, and Rosetta was living at 10 Strattondale Street in Cubitt Town.
From 1894 to 1903 Rosetta and Henry lived at 322 Manchester Rd, Cubitt Town, and this is where they are found in the 1901 census. Henry was working as a hydraulic oiler. By the 1911 census Henry was working as a general labourer for the Port of London Authority and the family had moved to 14 Albert Street, Poplar, and this is where they lived until Henry died in 1930.
Henry and Rosetta had eleven children, 7 girls and 4 boys, born between 1894 and 1915 - she was 46 when her youngest was born. The first 5 were baptised at St. John's, and Dorothy Louisa at All Hallow's Church, Devons Road. (The baptism records for the other 5 children haven't been found yet.)
Henry died at the age of 65 on 18 Jun 1930 at the Poplar & Stepney Sick Asylum (later known as St Andrews Hospital) at 73a Devons Road, Poplar. His death was due to myocardial degeneration, cardiac valvular disease and arteriosclerosis.
