Rosetta Amelia Whitfield was born 23 August 1869 at 35 Davis Terrace in Poplar, the first child of John Alfred Whitfield, a shipwright, and Sarah Ann Ingram.

In the 1871 census she was living with her parents at 6 Wint Terrace, Poplar (exact location of street not found but description of census district indicates it was this area. The first image on this page shows Wint Terrace in 1925). A brother, John Alfred, died as an infant in 1872 and her parents had three more daughters, Bertha Maria, Sarah Ann, and Louisa Anne. In the 1881 census Rosetta was living with her parents and three sisters at 338 Manchester Rd, Poplar.

A brother, Albert Victor, was born in 1881 and two sisters, Beatrice Maud and Verner Mabel were born in 1883 and 1886 respectively. From 1890-1893 the family of 9 lived at 503 Manchester Rd, Poplar, and Rosetta worked as a general domestic servant.

On 25 December 1893 Rosetta married Henry Charles Young, a labourer, at St. John's Church. Witnesses were Rosetta's father John Alfred Whitfield and sister Bertha Marie. At the time Henry was living at 7 Bloomsbury Street in Bromley and working as a labourer, and Rosetta was living at 10 Strattondale Street in Cubitt Town.

From 1894 to 1903 she and Henry lived at 322 Manchester Rd, Cubitt Town, and this is where they are found in the 1901 census. Henry was working as a hydraulic oiler. By the 1911 census Henry was working as a general labourer for the Port of London Authority and the family had moved to 14 Albert Street, Poplar, and this is where she lived until 1939. The street name was later changed, and her address became 14 Drew Street. She later moved a few streets away to 19 Cawdor Street in Poplar.

Henry and Rosetta had eleven children, 7 girls and 4 boys, born between 1894 and 1915 - she was 46 when her youngest was born. The first 5 were baptised at St. John's, and Dorothy Louisa at All Hallow's Church, Devons Road. (The baptism records for the other 5 children haven't been found yet.) At least two of her daughters, Rosetta and Dorothy, continued to live with her along with their spouses for a year or two after they were married. Her eldest son, Henry John Benjamin Young, was killed in a blitz bombing in Croydon in 1940. Her mother died in 1908 at the age of 64 from abdominal cancer and her father John Alfred died in 1916 at a sick asylum by suicide by falling at the age of 73. Rosetta's husband Henry died on 18 Jun 1930 due to heart disease.

Her granddaughter remembers her as a "little round woman", and that she was run over on her way to see the Ripleys (her daughter and family) and "was never the same after that". Rosetta died 27 Mar 1947 at St Luke's Hospital in Chelsea due to arteriosclerosis at the age of 78.
