John Alfred Whitfield was born 16 Mar 1843 in Limehouse, London, the fifth child of Frank Whitfield, a shipwright, and Maria Stockwell. He was probably named after his uncle John Alfred Stockwell. He was baptised at St. Anne's Church, Limehouse on 1 Apr 1850, along with his siblings William, Robert, Georgiana and Edward. The church had apparently been gutted by fire just days earlier on Good Friday (29 Mar 1850).

In 1850, the family was living in Nightingale Lane, Limehouse, but in the 1851 census they were living at 4 Cooper's Buildings in Limehouse. In the 1861 census the family of Frank and Maria, six children (including John), 1 grandchild and 1 lodger lived at 27 Oxford Terrace, Poplar.

Like his father, John worked as a shipwright all his life - in fact all of John's 7 siblings that have been traced past childhood became or married shipwrights.

On 2 Nov 1868 25 year-old John (now living in Stepney) married 24 year-old Sarah Ann Ingram (also living in Stepney), daughter of Thomas Owen Ingram, a shipwright, and Arabella Amelia Redknap, at St. Thomas Church, Stepney. Witnesses were George Costello and Elizabeth Mills. John's signing with a mark indicates he couldn't write.

On 23 Aug 1869 their first child Rosetta Amelia was born at 35 Davis Terrace, Poplar. In the 1871 census John, Sarah Ann, and Rosetta were living at 4 Wint (sp?) Terrace. (The exact location of Wint Terrace hasn't yet been found but the description of the census district indicates it was in this area. The first image on this page shows Wint Terrace in 1925). In 1873 they were living at 14 Oxford Terrace, Cubitt Town.

John and Sarah's second child, John Alfred Jr. died in infancy. They then had another three daughters, Bertha Maria b. 1873, Sarah Ann, b. 1876 and Louisa Anne b. 1879. They were all baptised at St. John's Church. In the 1881 census John, Sarah, and their four daughters were living at 338 Manchester Road, Poplar. Shortly after the census in 1881 a son, Albert Victor was born, followed by two daughters, Beatrice Maud in 1883 and Verner Mabel in 1886. These three were also baptised at St. John's.

From 1890-1894 (including the 1891 census) the family of two parents and seven children lived at 503 Manchester Road. From 1896-1908 (including the 1901 census) the family lived at 322 Manchester Road, from 1896-1900 renting 3 rooms (2 on the second floor and 1 in the basement) and in 1903 renting 4 1st floor rooms from his son-in-law Henry Young. From 1905-1908 John is no longer listed as a tenant but a resident, and Henry Young is not found at the same address so John may have bought the property from Henry.

John's wife Sarah Ann died 20 Jun 1908 at the age of 64 from abdominal carcinoma and exhaustion. In 1909 John is found on the voting list at 9 Galbraith Street, Poplar, and in the 1911 census he was living at 1 Castalia Street in Cubitt Town with his son Alfred, daughter Vurna and nephew Robert Boggas. Their lodgings had only 3 rooms, including any kitchen or front room they may have had, a small number of rooms for 4 people - they were clearly not well-off. John died rather tragically at the sick asylum in Bromley on 11 May 1916 at the age of 73. His death certificate states the cause of death as "violent fractures of pelvis & ribs & other injuries caused by climbing over the rail of the bridge at the sick asylum & throwing himself down some 30 feet. Suicide whilst of unsound mind."
