Vera aka "Peg" was born 26 December 1915 at 14 Albert Street in Poplar, the eleventh child of Henry Charles Young, a labourer, and Rosetta Amelia Whitfield. She was baptised at St. Frideswide Church in Poplar on 11 Jan 1916. Peg lived with her family at Albert Street until 1937 when the family moved to 14 Drew Street, Poplar.

She married George William Ripley, a lorry driver, on 30 September 1939 in Stepney, witnessed by George's father (or possibly brother?) Harry Ripley, and Vera's sister Constance Beatrice Sheridan. Harry and Vera had had three daughters, one of whom was born at Peg's sister's place in Surrey during the war in order to escape the bombing of London during the blitz. They lived at 23 Lockhart Street, Mile End, until at least the early sixties. They then moved to Dagenham. George died on 19 June 1979, aged 66. Peg passed away on the 18th of April 1997 at Oldchurch Hospital in Romford.
