Rebecca Ann Swan was born 7 June 1821 in Poplar, the eldest child of shipwright James Stephen Swan and Rebecca Jane Egalton. She was baptised on the 15th of July 1821 at All Saints Church, Poplar. Rebecca had nine siblings, born between 1823 and 1841, at least two of whom died in childhood. Her siblings grew up to be (or married) shipwrights, blacksmiths, servants and beer house keepers. On the 1841 census Rebecca, her parents, and siblings were living at Leicester Street in Poplar.
Rebecca's mother died in 1842 of phthisis at the age of 44. 21 year-old Rebecca was the eldest child in the family, and the youngest of her seven living siblings was only 3 so it's likely the family came to rely on her for childcare.
By the age of 21 Rebecca was in a relationship with shipwright Henry Dickson, and she gave birth to their daughter Rebecca Ann Dickson on the 7th of August 1843. Henry and Rebecca were married shortly afterwards on the 27th of August at St. Mary's Church, Stratford Bow. Witnesses were Rebecca's father James and Mary Ann Nelson.
Between 1843 and 1859 Henry and Rebecca had seven children: Rebecca b. 1843, Henry James b. 1844, Richard b. 1849, John George b. 1850, Sarah Jane b. 1857 and Emma Sarah b. 1859. Sadly the only two who reached adulthood were their eldest children Rebecca and Henry. Richard, William, Sarah and Emma all died within weeks of their births (Emma was born prematurely), and John died in 1863 at the age of twelve, from scarlatina (scarlet fever).
Rebecca experienced more bereavements in the 1860s: after her son John in 1863, her husband Henry Dickson died on 26 Oct 1864 aged just 42 from "dropsy" (generalised swelling often associated with heart failure). Rebecca's first grandchild was born prematurely in April 1864 and her son-in-law Henry Young's death in 1868 left her daughter Rebecca Young a young widow with two infant children to care for. Rebecca witnessed the death of father James Swan on 15 Apr 1866 at the age of 77.
Rebecca moved often during her life, perhaps reflecting an unstable financial situation. Apart from around the time of her son Henry James birth when they lived in Deptford St Nicholas, she lived within the areas of Poplar and Bromley-by-Bow: 19 Regent Street in 1843, then no. 18 of the same street in 1849 and no. 17 in 1851. In 1861 they were living at nearby 12 Orchard Street. In 1864 she was living at 2 Willis St and in 1866 she was down the road at no. 38.
In 1871 Rebecca's son Henry (a labourer) and daughter Rebecca Young (with her two sons) were living with her at 12 Leicester Street, Poplar. She and Henry were still living at the same address in 1881, but daughter Rebecca has remarried and moved next door to 11 Leicester Street. Rebecca's son Henry hasn't been found in records after 1881.
In 1891 Rebecca was living with a laundress and a labourer who do not appear to be related to her, at 2 Gaselee Street, Poplar. Her occupation is listed as "living on her means". Her daughter Rebecca Nowell was living with her second husband George and four children just down the road at 32 Gaselee Street.
Rebecca died from paralysis at the home of her daughter at 14 Gaselee Street on the 21st of March 1894 at the age of 72.
