Henry Dickson was born 6 December 1821 in Poplar, the third son of John Dickson, a mariner, and Ann (surname unknown). He was baptised at St. Dunstan and All Saints Church on 15 Sep 1822, the same day as his possible cousin Robert Thomas Dickson.
In the 1841 census he was living with his parents and 7 siblings in Robinhood Lane, Poplar. His father was working as a mariner and Henry and his brothers Thomas and William were working as shipwrights. Henry worked as a shipwright his whole life, with records later in his life describing him as a "journeyman" shipwright, indicating he had reached an intermediate level of skill in the trade (i.e. higher than an apprentice but not as skilled as a "master").
By the age of 21 Henry was in a relationship with Rebecca Ann Swan, daughter of shipwright James Stevens Swan, and she gave birth to their daughter Rebecca Ann Dickson on the 7th of August 1843. Henry and Rebecca were married shortly afterwards on the 27th of August 1843 at St. Mary's Church, Stratford Bow. Witnesses were Rebecca's father James and Mary Ann Nelson.
Between 1843 and 1859 Henry and Rebecca had seven known children: Rebecca b. 1843, Henry James b. 1844, Richard b. 1849, John George b. 1850, Sarah Jane b. 1857 and Emma Sarah b. 1859. Sadly the only two who reached adulthood were their eldest children Rebecca and Henry. Richard, William, Sarah and Emma all died within weeks of their births (Emma was born prematurely), and John died in 1863 at the age of twelve, from scarlatina (scarlet fever).
Henry and his young family moved often, perhaps reflecting an unstable financial situation. Apart from around the time of Henry James birth when they lived in Deptford St Nicholas, they lived within the areas of Poplar and Bromley-by-Bow: 19 Regent Street in 1843, then no. 18 of the same street in 1849 and no. 17 in 1851. In 1861 they were living at nearby 12 Orchard Street and when Henry died in 1864 they were living at 2 Willis St. Henry Dickson was only 42 when he died from "dropsy" (generalised swelling often associated with heart failure), on 26 Oct 1864. He was buried in Tower Hamlets Cemetery.
