John Dickson was born about 1791 in Poplar, London. He married Ann (surname unknown) about 1814-1815. She was born about 1794 in Poplar. They had the following children:
1. Thomas Dickson, born about 1816 in Poplar. (Although the baptism record has not yet been found for Thomas, he was living with the family on the 1841 and 1851 censuses and his marriage record says his father was a John Dickson, labourer).
2. William Henry Dickson, born 18 June 1819 in Poplar and baptised 17 June 1821 at St. Dunstan and All Saints Church.
3. Henry Dickson, born 6 December 1821 in Poplar and baptised 15 September 1822 at St. Dunstan and All Saints Church, the same day as Robert Thomas Dickson, son of appraiser Robert Dickson and his wife Ann. Robert Sr. is likely a relative of John, possibly a brother.
4. Ann Sophia Matilda Dickson, born about 1824 in Poplar and baptised 14 July 1824 at All Saints Church, Poplar.
5. Sarah Dickson, born about 1826 (probably in Poplar) and baptised 27 December 1829 at St. Dunstan and All Saints Church.
6. Joseph Dickson, born about 1828 in Poplar and baptised along with his sister Sarah on 27 December 1829 at St. Dunstan and All Saints Church.
7. Edward Dickson, born about 1830 in Poplar and baptised 9 January 1831 at St. Dunstan and All Saints Church.
8. George Dickson, born 27 November 1835 in Poplar and baptised 28 July 1837 at All Saints Church, Poplar.
Ann was about 22 when her first child was born and about 41 when her last child was born. The baptism records list John's occupation as "mariner". In 1841 the whole family was living at Robinhood Lane in Poplar and John was still listed as a mariner. Ann was a witness to her son William's marriage in 1845 and daughter Ann's marriage in 1851.
In the 1851 census John and Ann are still living at 12 Robinhood Lane, with their children Ann, Edward and George, and grandson Robert Aldous, whose mother Sarah Dickson died in 1847 when he was just 1 year old. John's occupation was listed as labourer.
John was working as a dock labourer when he died of stomach cancer on 2 March 1861. He died at 10 Orchard House Place, with his son William in attendance, and was buried in All Saints, Poplar Cemetery.
Research notes:
Some people also include a John Henry Dickson b. abt 1818, baptised 1833 at St. Margaret's, Westminster, in the list of children. This is most likely incorrect as the baptism record for this child shows the mother is named Mary, not Ann who he was married to at the time, and the father is listed in John Henry's marriage and baptism records as being a navy surgeon, while on the other children's records he's listed as a mariner. It also states they were living at Marylebone in 1833 which in not corroborated in the John & Ann Dickson family.
Some of John and Ann's descendants currently live in Australia and New Zealand.
