In attempting to determine exact birthplace, a researcher from Norway responded with the following: Hello again in Oregon, Then and now both emigrants, researchers and all of us are tempted to use the name of the nearest city, when no one would have heard of a little place someone is from. The capital of Norway, now called Oslo, was Christiania/Kristiania in the 1800s. Of course, he could have been from there. I have some possibilities, and no way of being sure if any is correct. The one did, in fact emigrate in 1883: Home: Aasnæs. Destination: Marsfield. Agent: Andersen. Line: Angelo. Date of travel: 23 March 1883. Kristian Syverssen, laborer, 24 [Thus b.abt. 1859] and Agnette Tørris., maiden, 34 [Thus b.abt. 1849]. I've found him in the 1865 census in Aasnæs with his parents Syver Hanssen, 43, and Marie Kristiansdotter, 35, his brothers Ole, Halvor, Oluf and Otto as well as Marie's parents who own the farm: Kristian Olssen and Oliane Eriksdotter. Everyone except Oliane was born in Aasnæs. Young Kristian Syverssen was born about 1859. Aasnæs is in Hedmark, northeast of Oslo, near the Swedish border. The next candidate is tempting because your "Longberg" might be the city of Kongsberg, and he has given name Peter. I haven't found him emigrating. He is Peter Severin Christian Syvertssen born in about 1858. In 1865 he lives with his parents Syvert Syvertssen, 38, and Anne Gurine Hansdotter, 36, and his brothers Herman Martinius, Hans Johan and Gustav Andreas. Everyone in the family was born in Kongsberg which is in Buskerud. Kongsberg is even closer to Oslo, in the opposite direction, and the nearest port is DRAMMEN, which could be your DVARN...? In Oslo itself in 1865 I find Christian Syverssen born about 1859 in Christiania as is the rest of the family: Ole Syverssen, 46, Marie Larsdotter, 41, the other son Johan and daughters Maren and Lovise. If the birthdate is off a couple years in the census, or if his name is misspelled Sivertssen (or worse), there are certainly other possitilities. But the above should be enough info for identification if you find out more about "your" Christian, and if he is one of the above. Beth
