"6 Nathaniel3 Gary (Nathaniel,1 Arthur1) was born in Roxbury, Mass., July 4, 1663, and was baptized there on the day following his birth. He was received to take hold on the covenant of the Roxbury church Nov. 14, 1686. … Nathaniel Gary was among the thirteen original settlers of 'New Roxbury,' now Woodstock, Conn., in April 1686, and drew lot number 18, which contained 15 acres of land in the east vale of the town. … In 1700 he became one of the founders of the settlement of Mashamoquet (later incorporated as Pomfret, Conn., in 1713), having disposed of his lands in Woodstock to Thomas Eaton. He was a selectman of Pomfret in 1714 and served as Grand Juror in 1715. During the last named year he removed with his family to Enfield, Conn., where he settled in the eastern part of that town. The history of Enfield (page 16) states: 'In 1715 the settlement of the east part of Enfield commenced, the first settlers were Nathaniel Gary who built a house and erected a grain mill … ' and on page 18 'Nathaniel Gary one of the first settlers of the east part of Enfield had the extraordinary number of 12 daughters, many of whom married and had numerous families.' … After a long life of usefulness and having been distinguished as one of the principal founders of three Connecticut municipalities, Nathaniel Gary died in Enfield in March 1740, at the age of 77 years. His widow survived him. His will is to be found in the Northampton Probate office, it was signed Mar. 24, 1740. In the instrument he mentioned his wife, Mary, his sons Nathaniel and Joshua, and daughters Hannah Goodale, Sarah Gile, Mehitable Jones, Mary Whipple, Rachel Haul (Hall) and Elizabeth Jones."
