"10 Samuel3 Gary (Nathaniel,2 Arthur1) was born in Roxbury, Mass., Sept. 7, 1673, and baptized there the same day. He removed to Woodstock, Conn., in 1689 to join his brother Nathaniel who had gone there with the original Roxbury company of settlers three years before. … In 1699 Samuel Gary bought a farm in 'Mashamoquet,' that part of Woodstock which in 1713 was incorporated as a separate town and named Pomfret. He was one of the incorporators of the place, signing the petition to the General Court for its incorporation, a town proprietor and a member of the first board of listers of the town, elected to office in 1714. He served as town hayward in 1721, collector of taxes 1722 and on the Grand Jury in 1731. He was a surveyor of note and much employed in drawing the boundary lines of the new town and in laying out the public lands. His home was in that part of Pomfret now included in the town of Putnam, Conn., which was incorporated in 1855. … He died in Pomfret, Nov. 19, 1759. His will dated Oct. 9, 1759, and proved on Dec. 4, of that year, mentions his wife Martha, his 'loving and only son, Josiah,' and his daughters, Lydia Lamb and Martha Brown. The inventory of his estate amounted to £142: 5s: 7d."
