Facts and Events
[26635.ged] Like his father, Nathan became a large land owner in Burke County, North Carolina. On February 5, 1778, he was granted 200 acres on main Catawba River, both sides. On May 28, 1778, he was granted 300 acres on 'Linvills' River with improvements. Nathan was noted as already being in possession of this land so it is reasonable to assume he made his home on this parcel of land. nathan is mentioned as being a neighbor of Danial Russell on Catawba River on November 28, 1778. On December 28, 1778, Nathan acquired an additional 150 acres on Linvills River next to the land he already owned. Nathan's name appears as an accused Torie on the Subpoena Docket for Tories, November 18, 1782. This does not mean that Nathan was a Torie but only that someone had accuded him of being a Torie. No proof was required for this accusation to be made. This was before the U.S. Constitution was written so it was a case of assumed quilt until you could prove yourself innocent. Nathan apparently never had a chance to prove himself innocent. He died just a few months later. Since Nathan died at almost the same time as his father it is quite possible that he died of wounds he received in the same Indian attack that killed his father. An administrators bond was granted to Avarilla Burchfield, april 23, 1783 for the estate of Nathan Burchfield. at the sale of his estate, Avarilla Burchfield was one of the buyers. |
