The first land transaction found involving Thomas was 300 acres on both sides Caney River up Burchfield's Camp. February 4, 1778. Thomas transferred (sold) this grant to James McMiney.

Thomas is mentioned as living 8 miles from a land grant to John and Charles McDowell. On November 18, 1778 Thomas entered two land grants; one was for 200 acres on both sides of Buck Creek, 1/2 mile below his own improvements up creek including improvements whereon he now lives, while the second was for 150 acres on Toms Creek on main wagon road including Mackences Cabin, beginning at the Cabin down creek. These grants may have been located norteast of present Marion, North Carolina. On December 28, 1778 Thomas entered a joint grant with Chalres McDowell for 640 acres on Headwaters beginning Crabtree below Loural, into forks of Crabtree including some of Tow River.

Thomas is mentioned as a defendant in a case for damages in the January 1780 Burke County Courts. More information on it apparently is available in the North Carolina Sate Archives. At least the original court papers are there.

April 20, 1786, Thomas is mentioned as being an adjoining property owner in a grant of 40 acres to Meshack Burchfield.
