                                                                                                                                           Robert Burchfield

Robert Burchfield was born Dec. 18, 1759, in Baltimore Co., MD. His family moved to North Carolina when he was a young boy. He joined the service while living in Burke Co., NC. Robert Burchfield has been recognized by the DAR as having served in the Revolutionary War in North Carolina. Robert married Elizabeth Hill in March 17, 1787. Shortly after his marriage, Robert moved to Franklin County, Kentucky. Known children include Robert (Elizabeth Meredith), Elizabeth (James O’Neal), Nancy (Benjamin Whitham), John G. (Elizabeth O’Neal), Sally (Danial Kelly), Kitty (John Smith) & Mary Burchfield (George Roberts). Robert died Oct. 29. 1844 in Ripley, Indiana. Many trees on ancestry.com list he is the son of Robert & Ann Clark Burchfield. They are his grandparents.

                                                                                                                                           Meshack Burchfield

Meshack Burchfield was born about 1762 in Baltimore Co., MD. As stated earlier, Meshack was the son of Thomas and Sarah Leatherwood Burchfield. Meshack was a Revolutionary War soldier. His wife is currently unknown. Children include Thomas Burchfield (Katherine Smart), Joseph Burchfield (Sallie Runner), James Burchfield (Lucinda Watts), Rebecca (Reuben Long), Unknown Daughter (Gabriel Long), Judeah (James Higginson), Eliza ( Alexander O’Banion), Meshack Jr. (Sarah Elizabeth Rone), and Young Burchfield (Elizabeth Jones). Meshack died in 1833 in Lewis Co., Missouri.

The legend then suggests that Mary‟s children maintained the Burchfield name and were raised as white despite being half-Cherokee. Variations exist, but the most frequent names suggested as children of Mary and Chief Oo-Wa-Hoos-Kee include Robert Burchfield, of Cades Cove (ca 1776-1860), Wilson Burchfield (1818-1896), Moses Yates Burchfield (1809-1885), and Noah “John Noah” Burchfield (ca 1797-1884). It should be noted that the documentary evidence - and now the YDNA evidence - for each of these “candidates” clearly indicate they were not the children of Chief Oo-Wa-Hoos-Kee. Instead, Robert Burchfield, of Cades Cove (ca 1776-1860) was the son of Nathan Burchfield, Sr. and Abarilla. Wilson Burchfield (1818-1896) was son of Nathan Burchfield, Jr. (Anna “Annie” McKinney). Moses Yates Burchfield (1809-1885) was son of Robert Burchfield, of Cades Cove (1776-1860), and we now know Noah “John Noah” Burchfield was son of Henry Kerley (1750- 1836) and Elizabeth Burchfield. More than likely Mary/ Arry did not survive the Indian attack. Her body was not found.

Lydia Burchfield was born on July 24, 1763. She was kidnapped and scalped by Indians. Lydia married Andrew Hunter on. Known children include Margaret (Michael Mason), Elizabeth (Israel Leander Simmons), Anna (James Gibbs), Hannah Matilda (Joseph Dobson Murphy) James (Elizabeth Burnette), Andrew (Nancy Burnette), William Hunter, & Nathan Burchfield Hunter (Ann Elvira Murphy).

The marriage of Elizabeth Burchfield to John Reese, son of Ambrose Reese, is in dispute. Several trees on ancestry.com list John Reese, son of Ambrose Reese, married Anna Story. More research is needed.

                                                                                                                                             John Burchfield (Possible Son)

John Burchfield was born on June 6, 1765. John states in his pension application, he was born in Guilford Co., NC, but Guilford was formed from parts of Orange and Rowan Co., NC in 1771. The parents of John Burchfield have not been proven. This line is in dispute! The Burchfield Project lists he was a brother to Meshack and Robert Burchfield based on the fact he stated he was born in Guilford Co., NC and entered service in Burke Co., NC. Some researchers claim John Burchfield (Mary Patterson) is the son of Joseph Burchfield & Dieska Peak. John does not state in his pension application, he is a brother to Meshack or Robert Burchfield. It is not known why he lived in Abbieville, South Carolina for thirteen years. John Burchfield (1728), Joseph Burchfield (1731) and James Burchfield (1733) are also living in South Carolina. Sometime after 1800, John Burchfield (Revolutionary Soldier) moves to Warren Co., KY.

John’s first wife is unknown. His daughter Mary married Elijah Baker in Warren Co., KY. After Elijah’s death, Mary married Joseph Combs in Butler Co., KY. It is possible Thomas (Margery Inglish & Sarah Beasley) & Larkin Burchfield (Mary Combs) are related to John Burchfield. Other individuals who may or may not be related are Delilah Burchfield (James Skeleton) & Catherine Burchfield (Abraham Duff).

John Burchfield later moves to Bourbon Co., KY, where he married his second wife Mary Patterson, daughter of one his commanding officers during the Revolutionary War. John Burchfield also served for one year in the War of 1812. John died on Dec. 28, 1841, in Jefferson Co., IN.

One descendant of Richard M. Burchfield, son of John Burchfield (Mary Patterson), is a positive match to the Young Family. It is not known when this out-of wedlock event occurred.See Young Project on Family Tree DNA. More descendants need to submit both YDNA & Autosomal DNA to Family Tree DNA.

Children include Matilda, Malinda & Melissa Burchfield. It is also possible Abigail is the mother of Thomas (Margery Inglish & Sarah Beasley) and Larkin Burchifled (Mary Combs).
