AGED MAN FOLLOWS WIFE TO GRAVE IN LESS THAN WEEK MATHIAS SPANG, OKEMOS PIONEER DIES TODAY, SIX DAYS AFTER MRS. SPANG'S DEMISE. Less than a week after the death of his wife, Sarah Spang, 74 years old, who died on January 31, Mathias Spang, the husband, passed away this morning at the farm home south of Okemos, at the age of 84 years. The funeral of Mrs. Spang was held this morning at St. Mary's Catholic church, while that of the husband will be held at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning from the same church. Mathias Spang's death was due to pneumonia. Although possessing a strong constitution, his advanced age made it impossible to withstanding the ravages of the disease. Mr. and Mrs. Spang had been life long residents of Okemos, living on the same farm for the past 42 years. The parents are survived by four sons and two daughters [two sons and four daughters]. They are Mrs. Harvey L. Bennet[t], Mrs. Sarah Kelley of New York, Mrs. May [sic; Mary] Wagner, Okemos and Mrs. John Colbath of Holt, son Jacob and Mathew of Denver, Colorado. State Journal Lansing, Michigan 5 February 1915 FARMERS DIES AS WIFE IS BURIED Mathias Spang Follows Aged Wife in Death Friday As the casket bearing the body of Mrs. Sarah M. Spang was being removed from the undertaking rooms preparatory to its being taken to St. Mary's Catholic church for burial services. Friday morning, a telephone message from the farm home near Okemos informed relatives of the death of the husband, Mathias Spang. Both Mr. and Mrs. Spang were ill from pneumonia at the time of the wife's death last Sunday. The body of Mrs. Spang was held pending the arrival of a son, Matthew Spang, from Denver, Colo., who arrived Thursday. The husband's condition grew steadily worse during the week. The family had occupied their parent farm house for the past 44 years, having moved there from this city. Surviving the aged couple are four daughters, Mrs. H. Bennett, Mrs. T. C. Wagner of Meridian, Mrs. John Colmus [sic; Colbath] of Holt and Mrs. A. Kelley of New York; and two sons, Jacob Spang of Mason and Matthew Spang of Denver. Funeral arrangements for Mr. Spang have not been made. |
