Mary Welsh was baptised on 20th April 1740 at Kensworth (then in Hertfordshire). She was the daughter of Martha Welsh, formerly Worcester, and her husband Jephtha Welch.

On 16th April 1759, aged about nineteen, Mary married John Tomkins at Kensworth. They do not appear to have had any children.

Mary's father died in 1782 and her mother died six months later in 1783.

Mary and John were married for 39 years. Mary died at the age of 58, being buried at Kensworth on 19th July 1798. John survived her by nearly ten years, and remarried in 1799.
