John Tomkins' origins have yet to be established. His first confirmed sighting is on 16th April 1759, when he married Mary Welsh at Kensworth in Hertfordshire. They do not appear to have had any children.

John and Mary were married for 39 years. Mary died in 1798, aged 58.

The following year, John married Ann Roe at Kensworth.

John died in 1808, being buried at Kensworth on 13th May 1808. Ann survived him by nearly eight years.
