According to Shankland Family Research by Albert Shankland, Mary Ann married Joseph T. Smart in 1846 and "died during the rebellion in Boone Co., Indiana while her husband was a 1st Lieut. in the 14th Kentucky Vol. Infantry."

 A query on the Smart family message board states that "Joseph Smart born 1818 KY, died Oct 6, 1888 in Sumner, MO.  He served in Civil War in company A, 14th KY Cav Rgt. His wife was Mary Ann who died Mar 5 1863 while Joseph was away during the war. Seeking her maiden name." {Smart Message Board, Jack Stevens, 16 June 1999,  <genealogy.com>, Nov 2003}
 According to 'Descendants of William Shankland', Mary Ann and Joseph had children: Martha Luella, 1851-1935, who married Francis Henry Huff in 1866.
