According to a Smart Family Genealogy site, Joseph was probably the son of Humphrey and Mary Smart who settled in Nicholas Co.{<http://cowaro.com/Genealogy/Surname_file/Smart.html>, 23 Jan 2009}

 According to Shankland Family Research by Albert Shankland, Mary Ann Shankland married Joseph T. Smart in 1846 and "died during the rebellion in Boone Co., Indiana while her husband was a 1st Lieut. in the 14th Kentucky Vol. Infantry."
 A query on the Smart family message board states that "Joseph Smart born 1818 KY, died Oct 6, 1888 in Sumner, MO.  He served in Civil War in company A, 14th KY Cav Rgt. His wife was Mary Ann who died Mar 5 1863 while Joseph was away during the war. Seeking her maiden name." {Smart Message Board, Jack Stevens, 16 June 1999, <genealogy.com>, Nov 2003}
 According to 'Descendants of William Shankland', Mary Ann and Joseph had Martha Luella, 1851-1935, who married Francis Henry Huff in 1866.
 In the 1850 census for Nicholas Co., Kentucky, Joseph Smart is 32, a farmer from Kentucky with $2,100.  His wife Mary J. is 26, from Kentucky. Their child Lorenza T. is 3. {p.461b, 1850 Nicholas Co. Census, Nicholas Co Kentucky Archives, <www.rootsweb.com/census>, 12 Oct 2003}
 In the 1860 census for Nicholas Co., Kentucky, Joseph T. Smart is 42, a farmer from Kentucky with $1500.  His wife Mary is 36 and their children are Lorenzo 12, male; Martha 7; William 5; and John 1 -- all born in Kentucky.  In the 1870 census for Paris, Edgar Co., Illinois, John T. Smart is 52, farmer from Kentucky; [second wife] Nancy M is 39; Lorenza T. is 23 male farm laborer; William F. is 15; John H. 11; and Mary E. R. 3 -- all born Kentucky. {p.157}
 In the 1880 census for Upper Blue Lick, Nicholas Co., Kentucky, Joseph Smart is 62 from Kentucky (father Kentucky, mother Pennsylvania), farmer; with Nancy 49 and daughter Mary 13 -- both born Kentucky, parents same. {Page 470C }  NOTE: There are a W. F. Smart and a John Smart listed in Seven Hickory, Coles Co., Illinois, as farm hands.
 In the Purvis Cemetery of Sumner, Chariton Co., Missouri, there is a record of "Joseph T. Smart died Oct. 6, 1888 age 70 yr. 6 mo. 23 da. (This stone bears a Masonic Emblem)" and "Mary A. wife of Joseph 'I'. Smart died Mar. 5, 1863 age 39 yr.1 mo. 15 da."  Joseph's sons are living in Chariton Co. in 1900.
