Mary Jane Knapp was born on 4 September 1861 in St. Louis, Missouri. Baptismal records for St Bridget of Erin Church in St. Louis record her baptism on 14 September 1861. No sponsors are named, but parents are named. She was the daughter of William and Margaret (O’Brien) Knapp. She died on 13 February 1944 in Alton, Illinois. Mary Jane, both of her daughters and some of her sisters suffered from a form of dementia for several years before their deaths. Mary Jane lived in Jerseyville with her married daughters. During the school year she lived with Frederica as Frederica was teaching school and in the summer she lived with her daughter Marguerite.
