Margaret Elizabeth O'Brien's was actually born on or before 19 October 1843. as that is the date that she was baptized. Her tombstone says that she was born on 13 November 1843 and her death certificate says that she was born on 17 November 1843 in the City of Cork, Ireland. Her death certificate says that her parents were Michael O'Brien and Mary Manning. Further information is found in the records of St. Mary Catholic Church in Youghal, Cloyne, County Cork, Ireland. The baptismal information is regarded as more correct for birth and affirms the names of Margaret's parents. St. Mary's Church in Youghal records Margaret's baptism as occurring on 19 October 1843. The baptismal records identifies her parents as Michael O'Brien and Mary Manning. Sponsors were Elizabeth Manning and Michael Buckley. The baptismal record states that she lived at Market Square in Youghal. Youghal is a seaside town near the City of Cork.

According to her great granddaughter, Winifred Conklin Schertz, Margaret attended a convent school in Ireland and came to America with her mother.

The 1900 census shows that she was the mother of 11 children, 8 of whom were living. She died on 22 January 1920 in Alton (Madison County) Illinois. Margaret and her husband are buried at Beltrees Cemetery in Beltrees, Illinois. Margaret's tombstone says she was b. Nov. 13 and her death cert says Nov, 17. Her death certificate names her parents and says that she and her parents were born in Ireland. Family history says that she attended a convent school in Ireland and came to America with her mother. The 1900 census shows her as the mother of 11 children, 8 living. Her obituary gives her middle name and says she was born in City of Cork.
