Facts and Events
Sweet Life Goes out. Death Laid a Heavy Hand on the Home of Jonas Hawkins. All over Sharpsville Wednesday, there was genuine sorrow when it became known that death had claimed Mary, one of the 12-year-old twin daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Jonas E. Hawkins, of that place, her death being due to acute pneumonia. Her father is president of the First National Bank of this city and is widely known overall the county. Mary was taken ill four or five days ago with Spanish influenza and her condition gradually grew worse until a few hours before her death pneumonia developed. She was in the eighth grade of the Sharpsville schools and would have graduated the coming year. She would have been 13 years old, had she lived until October 20th. Besides her sister, Marjorie, she leaves her parents, and four other sisters, Mrs. B. F. Pratt, of Lexington, Kentucky, Mrs. Eugene Henderson, of Sharpsville, Mrs. Coral Hawkins Drake, of Louisville, Kentucky, Mrs. Bernice Hawkins, and three brothers, J. M. Hawkins, C. D. Hawkins and H. T. Hawkins of Sharpsville. Mary was a member of the Sharpsville Presbyterian Church and her pastor, Rev. Rice, will conduct her funeral services Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home and Mrs. Cleo VanBibber will sing. Burial will be at the Sharpsville cemetery. [Obituary of Mary Lois Hawkins in the Tipton Tribune 3 October 1918, p. 1. Correct spelling for Coral is Koral, and for the married name Darke is Dark.] .......................................
