Mary Ann Cousins was baptised on 27th December 1840 at Hunston in Sussex, daughter of Lucy Cousins, formerly Grant, and her husband Ephraim Cousins, an agricultural labourer. Mary appears in the 1841 census living with her parents and siblings at Church Lane in Hunston.

In 1842, when Mary was about two years old, her father died. Just over three years later her mother married again, with her second husband being an agricultural labourer named George Harris, who thus became her stepfather.

Sadly Mary died at the age of ten, being buried at Hunston on 8th November 1850.
