She did not have Ann's ability for social chatting; she was honest, truthful and the most undiplomatic person Virginia ever knew. She was also one of Virginia's favorite people. Also, she and Dell were at sword points a great deal of the time. She spent her life raising other people's children. Since she was the oldest, she had to assume some of the responsibility for her sister, Daisy Frances. She once asked her mother why she had so many children and was promptly told to mind her own business. Like her parents, she developed tuberculosis and spent some months at Saranac Lake where she was cured. By that time both Daisy Frances and Dell were widows and so, along with Ann, all four girls lived together in the old family home in Mount Vernon. For a time Mary slept in a tent in the back yard winter and summer. It was a wonderful thing with a wood floor, two sides which opened up completely and a door with room for two beds. When William Jr's. first wife died, she went to live with him and took care of Frances and William Baldwin until he remarried. After he remarried, she went to Pennsylvania to care for the children of some friends of the Mount Vernon Coup's. While she was at Will's, her sisters Daisy Frances and Dell were married, Ann was living with friends and Rebecca also lived with him. After the death of John's wife, she went to Saginaw, Michigan to raise John, Jr. and Elizabeth. She remained there for the rest of her life.
