Mary J. Conklin, daughter of Moses and Jane (Willson) Conklin was born around 1851, probably in Butler County, Ohio. By 1870 the family had moved to Elk City, Howard County, Kansas. She is listed as Mary J. Winters in the 1883 probate records of her grandfather, Joseph Cory Conkling. On 4 December 1870 she married Hiram D. Winters in Harrison Township, Chatauqua County, Kansas. The family lived Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) in 1879, but had returned to Sycamore Township, Montgomery County, Kansas by 1880. They are not found in the 1900 Kansas census.
