Alice Martha Conklin, daughter of Moses and Jane (Willson) Conklin was born on 17 January 1856 in Butler County, Ohio. As a child, records list her as Martha Alice Conklin. She married Tilghman H. Aley, son of John and Eliza Aley on 29 October 1876. Tilghman was born on 12 October 1846 in Salem, Indiana. He served in the 137 Indiana Voluntary Infantry during the Civil War. Tilghman was a farmer and also taught school. Eventually he became the school superintendent in Dexter, Kansas. Alice is listed as Alice Alley in the 1883 probate records of her grandfather, Joseph Cory Conkling. The family lived in Cedar Vale (Chatauqua County), Kansas. Alice and her sister Lizzie are said to have made the flag for the first 4th of July celebration in Cedar Vale. To celebrate their 28th wedding anniversary Alice and Tilghman took a train to 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. The train was involved in a wreck on the way to St. Louis and both Alice and Tilghman died in that accident. They died on 10 October 1904 in Warrensburg, Missouri and are buried in Cedar Vale Cemetery in Cedar Vale, Kansas.
